It is possible to reach a state of peace and harmony by only using your hands, your thumbs specifically. The position of hands or ‘mudras’ are a very important part in yoga practice, as they are known as ‘producers of joy’.

The explanation and reason for this strange practice is that there are an enormous amount of nerve endings in our fingers and when you apply pressure to them in a specific way; they help us to connect channels that allow energy to circulate through our body more easily.

The good thing is that this exercise can be done anywhere and at any time in the day. simply spend a few minutes and you are able to reach a state of absolute relaxation

Gyan Mudra for Healing (Mudra of Knowledge)

Peacefully sit in a lotus position and keep your hands on your knees, then with the tip of your thumb touch the tip of your index finger and keep the other three fingers straight.The benefits of this position are that you help your mind relax and you improve your ability to concentrate.

It also keeps your brain power smart and sharp. In addition, it can cure insomnia or at least make you sleep longer and with regular practice it can also lower your stress levels and provides some relief from depression.

Vayu Mudra (Mudra of Air)

Fold your index finger towards the palm and press it with the base of your thumb. The rest of the fingers should be extended as much as possible.

The benefits of this position are that the mudra yoga eliminates excessive gasses from your body. It can also help with problems associated with the air elements, such as constipation, arthritis, flatulence, cervical spondylitis and others.

Prithvi Mudra for Healing (Mudra of Earth)

Start this exercise by touching the tip of your ring finger with the tip of your thumb and pressing both fingers with each other and keeping the other remaining fingers extended outward.

The benefits of this exercise are that it balances the Earth element in your body, as that improves your blood circulation, your body weight, increases your digestive power  and helps with vitamin deficiency associated problems.

Agni Mudra (Mudra of Fire)

This mudra is associated with the fire element in your body. Do this exercise by closing your ring finger towards your palm and pressing your second phalanx with the base of your thumb and keep the rest of your fingers extended outwards and straight.

Do the exercise early in the morning on an empty stomach for best results. If you are suffering from acidity don’t do the Agni mudra exercise.

The benefits of it are that it reduces the levels of cholesterol in the body, as well as it reduces fat and improves the metabolism and boosts the immune system

Jal Mudra (Varuna Mudra / Mudra Of Water)

This is a very simple exercise to do and it is a basic yoga mudra as well. Just touch the tip of your little finger with the tip of your thump, but don’t press the fingers just yet and keep the rest of the fingers straight. Try sitting in a cross-legged position as it is the preferable position for this exercise.

By doing this exercise you are improving your blood circulation and reducing body aches. It also helps to bring back taste sensations and helps with reducing the dryness in your mouth.

Shunya Mudra (Mudra Of Emptiness)

Press the phalanx of your middle finger against the base of the thumb. This is all you have to do for the exercise and the benefits are relief of motion sickness and vertigo, as well as helpful for ENT (ear, nose, tongue) problems.

Prana Healing (Mudra Of Life)

Bend your little finger and ring finger and touch the tips of those two fingers with the tip of your thumb.

The benefits of this exercise are that you will feel more energetic and you will help out your body with its immunity. You can also prevent tiredness and cure any eye problems you might have as well as increase the power of the eyes.
